'From Puberty to the Menopause'

Chairs in a Garden
And there they sat,
sharing a table, conversation ,the wine.
Seven years became fourteen,
fourteen became twenty-one.
The beauty of the garden,
like the fence, surrounded them.
When the wine and conversation
were finished, they got up.
The impregnations of their bodies and love
were left behind on the separate chairs.
They saw the gate, open,
leading to a hazy outside.
They looked into each other’s eyes
with some bewilderment, but more surprise.
For what they had never noticed
was that the gate had always been there,
and it had always stood open
for both to come and go,
for both to be able to make choices.
