The Place We're Touched Poem Nikki Bennett Poems

 'Pink Nightie’

This collection of poems is the result of an eleven-week stay in hospital prior to heart surgery. It is an honest, often quirky, look at life on the ward and in isolation.

Example

Medical Time

They shouldn’t put clocks
at the foot of the bed
in isolation rooms,
where you can see
the movement of the sun
through the sky-light –
your only view.

They shouldn’t put clocks
in your constant vision,
inescapably,
so you hear
the seconds ticking away
like your breath or pulse
or blood pressure.

They shouldn’t put clocks
on their dresses,
neatly-pinned,
so you struggle
to work out “real time”,
upside down,
like your life has been turned.
